mac mini on usb-c hub monitor does not work

Device: Mac Mini M1 (OS: Monterey 12.0.1)

Monitor: Dell U3219Q

Currently using usb-c to usb-c cable to connect mac mini and monitor.

Also connected usb upstream cable on mac mini and monitor.

When mac mini is turned off, the usb-a hub on dell monitor works fine with charging.

However, when I turn on mac mini, the usb-a hub function is disabled and it does not turn on whatever I do.

Is there any way I can use the usb hub on dell monitor when my mac mini is turned on?

Dell and HP displays do not play well with Mac's on a single cable.

Try using a Premium Certified HDMI cable for video and a USB cable for the built-in USB hub.

Direct USB-C to USB-C for monitor to Macs doesn’t work very well because monitors are clueless on what’s connected, a power-hungry laptop or power re-buffing desktop. I would connect the monitor’s USB C to the mini’s USB-A port using suitable C-A adapter/cable to enable hub functions. For video, connect HDMI-HDMI with a cable not longer than 5’.

+1 but should be mentioned that the USB cable needs to go to the Mac’s USB-A port…

+2 makes sense, especially if you can not lock the display on the HDMI signal.

Sorry, was unclear. “a USB cable for the built-in USB” needs to mention USB-A port because technically they’re all USB ports. The USB-C port needs to be avoided.
