Mac reboots in Recovery Assistant

On startup my MacBook Air (mid 2013 model) goes straight into Recovery Assistant and forces me to change the Password, though I have not forgotten my password nor requested to change it! It's stuck in this mode. Shut down > Restart > and back to Recovery Assistant to change password.

Trouble is the display is not working so I am doing all this while connected to my TV. All I want to do is to put a few files on to a USB, back up the Macbook, and scrap it.

Any advice will be much appreciated.
