How do I erase my Mac to reinstall and reset my password if I previously established a recovery key but have lost it. I’ve tried using the command r and command option r functions and it still starts up to a black screen with a lock on it.
You have set a firmware passcode.
There is no way to bypass that. You need to remember the firmware passcode or you will have to take the machine along with the original proof of purchase to Apple to have it removed.

Are you describing a lock icon?
