Friend gave me an old phone but I can't reset to factory settings - help please?

HI there

A friend of mine upgraded to a new iPhone and gave me his old one, but ideally I want to put my Apple ID on it as currently I'm still using his. Unfortunately he can't remember the 4 digit code I need to reset it to factory settings. Is there any other way it can be rest please?
