I have some files on Excel on my Mac and I want to share or transfer these files to my MacBook Air so I can work on them and then send them back to my Mac when I get home

Use iCloud Drive:
One each device, log into iCloud Drive, and upload this file(s) to it: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive. See if you can access them on there.
