Non-apple charging cables suddenly working

Hello! I have a drawer full of non apple charging cables that never really worked for me. My iphone would start charging and then suddenly stop. To continue charging, I would need to remove the cable and reinsert. My guess is that the software was detecting that it was not an apple cable and stop the charge.

I recently had no choice but to use one of these cables and it worked seamlessly. I then tried a few more and they also worked. I'm trying to pinpoint what is happening and my guess is that in iOS 15, apple decided to allow these cables to charge their phones... anyone else have some data points that could be used to solve this mystery? Thank you!

iPhone 4s, iOS 9
