Iphone13 pro switching between 5G and EDGE, missing 4G most of the times

Hi, just received brandnew Iphone 13pro, was using iphone 11pro before.

the new phone switches between 5G and EDGE, and seems to ignore the fact that there is 4G as well (in most cases, not all the times). Both 5G and EDGE work at much lower speeds than the 4G did on my iphone 11.

Even if I force the iphone 13 to use 4G (eg switch off 5G), it still reduces to EDGE. This makes the pone unworkable, cant use for instance navigation while in the car, as it keeps on switching

I contacted my network operator (Vodafone), they say they have pretty much full national coverage, and were kind enough to send me a new SIM, just to make sure that there was not something wrong with the old sim.

using both old and new sim gives fantastic 4G coverage in the same area on the old iphone11, so there definately is a difference between the phones, and not the SIMs or the coverage.

Anyone else have this problem?

Could it be that the 4G antenna somehow is broken from factory ?

is the same antenna used for 4G, 5G & EDGE?

could it be that the iphone13 requires a much stronger signal than iphone 11?

if this is a particular problem with my device, I might ask for a new phone, if others have these network connectivity problems as well, in my opinion its a design fault in the antenna and Ill move back to my iphone11, as that one works pretty OK

You’ve decided to try to add your own iPhone to a carrier’s network, and that can have—as you’ve discovered—mixed results.

Some carriers operate networks that will tolerate this configuration and this iPhone, and some don’t.

I’d expect this iPhone is either not receiving carrier updates for the local network, or has an erroneous update loaded, or that the local network is incompatible or misconfigured for this iPhone.

There’ve been folks trying to get newer iPhones working with CDMA and not GSM / LTE networks too, and that doesn’t work all that well.

Or yes, some part of this iPhone cellular communications radio system isn’t operating as expected. But that’d be fairly unusual. Not having a proper update for the carrier network would be more typical. Unfortunately, warranties are not international, and the carrier may or may not be willing to add this iPhone to their network. Which are among the risks of freelance and unsanctioned international cellular network integration efforts.

Try resetting the network, and resetting the iPhone. Past that, you may just have found an incompatibility with this carrier and this device. Apple locally may or may not be willing to check and potentially repair this iPhone for any communications problems, or may require it be checked and repaired in the country it was sold in.

I'm afraid i cant get the 4G (or 5G for that matter) working normally, I have now also tried outside my homecountry, exactly same problem. Apparently it is not the local network. Looks like the antenna is just to weak for the signal, particularly if you are a car, or behind a tree.

I am doubting between sending this phone back and try a new same version (eg, my particular one is a bad make), or If I just should go back to my old phone, despite the low battery life.

I see more complaints about the connectivity online, dont understand why apple doesn't fix this
