MacBook Pro 2021 M1 crackling sound from Apple TV app

My new MacBook Pro 2021 M1 16" has recently started outputting crackling sound when playing from Apple TV app. I have found various posts and articles on similar issues but none with actual working solutions or this specific. Here is what is most odd and interesting...

the crackling sound from an Apple TV app video only happens when in FULL SCREEN. If I reduce the display size, normal window or put in PiP then the sound appears to be normal with no crackling. As soon as I move to FULL SIZE the crackling restarts.

I suspect there is a bug on how M1 handles graphic vs sound. If no luck finding a solution then I guess it's back to Apple for a fix or replacement, it's barely a couple of months old.

I'm having the exact same problem on my 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max.

Anything I watch on the Apple TV app has a weird rumbling, crackling, or pulsating noise whenever there are low frequencies in the audio.

I can confirm that this happens only in the Apple TV app (not on Youtube, Spotify, or anywhere else) and only when I watch content in fullscreen mode. As soon as I exit fullscreen mode, the crackling stops.

I can also confirm that changing the sample rate to 48 kHz in the Audio MIDI Setup app solves the issue.

Apple, please solve this issue!

I am having the same issue. Will instantly revert back to the original Hz setting.

Rattling only seems to be the Apple TV app - sound is fine if a play Apple TV in Google Chrome (but the picture quality is not as good).

EDIT

Make sure you have closed any open programs that might be trying to use the speakers - for me I closed Apple TV and Logic Pro - I was then able to change the setting.

I'll add my voice to the chorus here as this seems to be the largest thread I've found so far on this issue (granted I've only just started looking harder).

  • My issue is system-wide - not just the Apple TV app. Music, Youtube videos in Safari, Quicktime, etc.
  • It's happening on 2 different 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.
  • My personal machine I had first and thought it was Soundsource (Rogue Amoeba app), but uninstalling didn't fix the problem.
  • I started a new job recently and they sent me a very similarly configured MBP. Problem showed up pretty quickly, but before even installing Soundsource.
  • The problem has spanned at least 12.2, 12.2.1 and into 12.3. I don't recall it happening before, but maybe I didn't notice it as I wasn't even using my personal maching to playback a lot of videos or music when I first bought it (iPad or iPhone usually). So I'm not sure if an update introduced it or it was there prior to 12.2 (I think my personal machine I started at 12.0.1 whereas my work machine was already at 12.2).
  • I check Audio MIDI Setup and I was already at 48Khz. Toggling to 44.1 and back hasn't fixed it.
  • I'm going to boot my personal MBP into Safe Mode and leave it there for a while to see if it is something I may have installed.
  • I did notice the same message in the Console logs mentioned in a post earlier (Music  HALC_ProxyIOContext::IOWorkLoop: skipping cycle due to overload), but also I see Messages had the same message and it's neither a warning nor error so I have a feeling that is a red herring.
  • I will log a ticket with Apple Support.

This is not likely to be hardware.

There are two distinct issues here:

  1. Crackling noises when you use the Apple TV app in full screen. The noises stop when viewing Apple TV in a window. That is what this discussion is about.
  2. Intermittent pops and clicks whenever a sound (from any application) is played.

Issue 1 can sometimes be fixed by using the Audio Midi Setup app. This suggests a software issue.

Issue 2 cannot be fixed as far as we know. It might be a hardware issue. You should return your MacBook or hand it in for service.

I'm on a 2021 M1 Pro Monterey 12.2. I did have the same behavior on 12.1, basically if I am playing Apple music it's going to make an awful cracking sound at some point. I set my kHz to 48 still no luck. The only other thing that seems to consistently cause it is a background application trying to send a sound for a notification, like messages or slack. But even without that it seems to happen intermittently. I tried to watch my console logs for some kind of an error or warning but nothing is sticking out to me.

I contacted Apple support with the above error message and basically pleaded with them to send it up the chain to an engineer to get a response, but they were rather non-committal on whether they would do that. They suggested I restart in safe mode and see if the problem persists. Which I am doing, in order to go through the suggested steps, but the tricky thing about this problem is that restarting seems to temporarily make the issue go away. Obviously we don't want to have to restart every few days...etc. The point is, I'm working on it. If anyone else experiences this problem, I'd suggest contacting apple support and point ing them to this thread and the error message I previously posted.

The crackles come from the mismatch of sample rates. 44.1k. vs 48k. This is a pretty typical symptom when using digital audio sources. In most Digital Audio Workstations no audio will be sent but is seems like the Apple audio API tries to do the best it can.

Now the root cause may be an incorrect defalt value for this parameter out of the box. Or maybe it was changed when I installed LogicX?

Also worked for me, and I have the same question.. why? I'm running a number of other apps which may affect the audio, including Parallels (and running sound apps in a linux VM there), GarageBand, Wondershare All-My-Tube, and VLC. Perhaps one of them is changing the default away from 48k (to 44.1, which is where the Audio Midi Setup said mine was).
