MacBook Pro 2021 M1 crackling sound from Apple TV app

My new MacBook Pro 2021 M1 16" has recently started outputting crackling sound when playing from Apple TV app. I have found various posts and articles on similar issues but none with actual working solutions or this specific. Here is what is most odd and interesting...

the crackling sound from an Apple TV app video only happens when in FULL SCREEN. If I reduce the display size, normal window or put in PiP then the sound appears to be normal with no crackling. As soon as I move to FULL SIZE the crackling restarts.

I suspect there is a bug on how M1 handles graphic vs sound. If no luck finding a solution then I guess it's back to Apple for a fix or replacement, it's barely a couple of months old.

I'm having the exact same problem on my 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max.

Anything I watch on the Apple TV app has a weird rumbling, crackling, or pulsating noise whenever there are low frequencies in the audio.

I can confirm that this happens only in the Apple TV app (not on Youtube, Spotify, or anywhere else) and only when I watch content in fullscreen mode. As soon as I exit fullscreen mode, the crackling stops.

I can also confirm that changing the sample rate to 48 kHz in the Audio MIDI Setup app solves the issue.

Apple, please solve this issue!

That's fair, poor third-party drivers or weird hardware interaction are pretty big causes of these kinds of issues, so rubbish Logitech software might not be helping. I have a Corsair mouse & keyboard on my M1 Pro and they both work great, but the Corsair software is utter garbage and I removed all traces of it in the end due to it constantly using CPU time and periodically crashing for no reason.

Having said that, I suspect the cause lies elsewhere for most of us, since I doubt every person suffering the issue is using a Logitech mouse right now. I might try using another account and installing my usual stuff bit-by-bit and seeing if any one things triggers it. Stuff like Docker, GoLand, Teams, Slack, etc

If it’s a software issue then it’s weird it’s not happening to everyone with the same hardware. Maybe some sort of software corruption unless there really is a change in hardware somewhere inside between some machines.

The reason I came here was obviously different from what other issues people have experienced as mine was literally fixed with the 44.1k to 48k sample rate change in Audio MIDI though listening to that video you linked then it’s clearly something I’m not experiencing myself as mine literally sounded like a sample rated mismatch. Hope people find a fix for this or ideally Apple does.

By different software we mean you might be running a browser, VLC and MS Word, where as I am running two software development IDEs, MS Teams, Slack, Python, iTerm2, two different browsers with a vast number of tabs, Spotify, Discord and Sublime Text. Thus I likely put way more pressure on the RAM and CPU than you do, and that is fairly likely where the issue is, and explains why restarting fixes it for a bit, and the length of time it remains fixes seems related to how much you run.

Sure. As I read down through the initial replies I noticed someone telling people to change the output sample rate which actually fixed my issue. There is clearly something more to it than the problem I have and probably even a different problem than that which the sample rate change fixes and I hope people get to the bottom of it but I’d hope that if the problem was fixed by the OP by doing the same as I what I did then a new thread is probably a better place to address this.

This is what i experience. I run parallels with windows arm version, and it started notising with popping and cracling inside wm. Funny thing is when scrolling web sites, it is lagging with a "bip bip bip sound (i dont know how to turn that sound off..). But it is not the issue alone, the sound popping/cracling occurs also outside of the vm, ref. whats is listed from cls34. I think it is related to interrupt issues after light persistant load over time (my thoughts..) It totally ruins the else good experience of the expensive M1 Max machine.

One piece of advice I haven't tried yet (I'm not hopeful of a solution) is to call the Apple hotline and ask for higher tech support. They say they need to investigate the problem. But I'm more likely to take the computer and just start bringing it to the repair shop. The warranty is running out and the solution is nowhere to be found.

This happens for me in all sound related apps, Headphones, internal speakers, BT speakers, and browsers, (sometimes it seems like Safari is ok interestingly). I am trying to work on Audio with Logic, and it crackles constantly. I have tried the midi setup fix, and that works for some things for a bit but if I am listening to Apple Music and following along within Logic... Forget about it. The M1 Macbooks have an issue. I can not use this laptop for any audio engineering work. I will have to struggle along with my older computer until this gets fixed. This is a total bummer. I bought this to do this kind of work. We need a real solution and not a hack fix changing settings around.

I reinstalled my M1 max 32GB with Montery 12.4 only native program except latest chrome version and (beta) teams with native Apple Silicon support (Used Rosetta 2 supported earlier). I have used the machine for at couple of days, and with several programs and browsers open, playing music videoes from youtube cracling is still present after some time (typically after 30mins-3 hours). Please fix this Apple!

This is a user to user only forum. Asking Apple to do anything here gets you nothing.

You can ask Apple to look into this yourself, via this link --> Feedback - MacBook Pro - Apple
