MacBook Pro 2021 M1 crackling sound from Apple TV app

My new MacBook Pro 2021 M1 16" has recently started outputting crackling sound when playing from Apple TV app. I have found various posts and articles on similar issues but none with actual working solutions or this specific. Here is what is most odd and interesting...

the crackling sound from an Apple TV app video only happens when in FULL SCREEN. If I reduce the display size, normal window or put in PiP then the sound appears to be normal with no crackling. As soon as I move to FULL SIZE the crackling restarts.

I suspect there is a bug on how M1 handles graphic vs sound. If no luck finding a solution then I guess it's back to Apple for a fix or replacement, it's barely a couple of months old.

I'm having the exact same problem on my 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max.

Anything I watch on the Apple TV app has a weird rumbling, crackling, or pulsating noise whenever there are low frequencies in the audio.

I can confirm that this happens only in the Apple TV app (not on Youtube, Spotify, or anywhere else) and only when I watch content in fullscreen mode. As soon as I exit fullscreen mode, the crackling stops.

I can also confirm that changing the sample rate to 48 kHz in the Audio MIDI Setup app solves the issue.

Apple, please solve this issue!

I'm having the same issue, except it is a brand new Macbook Pro 2021 and the sound is crackly every time I try connecting to my TV via AppleTV, regardless of fullscreen or not.

It sounds totally fine with my older Macbook Air so it is unfortunate that the brand new laptop isn't connecting the audio well.

I tried a different test account with the same result.

I should clarify that the sound that comes from the Macbook Pro speakers works fine, it's when I connect to my TV via Apple TV Screen Mirroring that the crackling/sound distortion occurs. The audio with screen mirroring works fine when using my older Macbook Air and old Macbook Pro so not sure why it is crackling with this brand new laptop.

I am having intermittent issues with crackling sounds having one audio source playing (like apple music) and getting a notification from messages, or pulling up a youtube clip. It seems to be an issue (at least for me) with something actively playing already and then a second sound source needs to make a sound. I haven't been able to find any solutions to this after research either.

So many responses and advices what you can try to fix the issue, and people usually reply with "Thank you! This worked!". Would be nice to explain what you did, what computer you have. If it works on some computers then it has to be hardware issue, and we will have time to return product if not working for us. It is ugly that Apple won't send some info about issue and what we should expect. I tried everything all of you suggested. I have OS Monterey 12.2 and MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro bought in December 2021 and still have issue. Updated to latest everything and no success. F* annoying sound. Wish I can rip out speakers, to not have them at all.

I have a very similar issue, but without the Apple TV connected.

I'm just playing music on my brand new MacBookPro M1 Pro 16" using Spotify and every few seconds a "GRUNCH" interrupts the song that's playing.

I have a secondary display connected to it.

I tried opening the Audio Midi Setup to try the fix suggested by RichieBBB but the speakers format was already set to 48000 Hz.

This is very annoying and not expected from a new machine.

I have this crackling popping sound when I playback from with HDMI to TV or through home sharing via Apple TV.

AirPlay is pointless due to the lag the videos suffer during playback. very distracting.

I have tried 2 different HDMI cables, different HDMI ports on my amp, setting to 48K was a no go as was already 48K.

Tried other settings to no avail.

Playback locally on MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14 inch is totally fine, but external playback is a no go for me with this terrible noise.

Ok so I got a 4K Apple TV. it both mirrors and plays back from sharing without issue. and on 3rd Gen Apple same result. (it previously did it on this but not any more. it just updated to Monterey 12.2.1 not sure if anything to do with that.

main problem with the sound cracking and popping seems to be now with the HDMI connection.

weird.
