MacBook Pro 2021 M1 crackling sound from Apple TV app

My new MacBook Pro 2021 M1 16" has recently started outputting crackling sound when playing from Apple TV app. I have found various posts and articles on similar issues but none with actual working solutions or this specific. Here is what is most odd and interesting...

the crackling sound from an Apple TV app video only happens when in FULL SCREEN. If I reduce the display size, normal window or put in PiP then the sound appears to be normal with no crackling. As soon as I move to FULL SIZE the crackling restarts.

I suspect there is a bug on how M1 handles graphic vs sound. If no luck finding a solution then I guess it's back to Apple for a fix or replacement, it's barely a couple of months old.

I'm having the exact same problem on my 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max.

Anything I watch on the Apple TV app has a weird rumbling, crackling, or pulsating noise whenever there are low frequencies in the audio.

I can confirm that this happens only in the Apple TV app (not on Youtube, Spotify, or anywhere else) and only when I watch content in fullscreen mode. As soon as I exit fullscreen mode, the crackling stops.

I can also confirm that changing the sample rate to 48 kHz in the Audio MIDI Setup app solves the issue.

Apple, please solve this issue!

The issue started after an upgrade eh? Tough to confirm without input from Apple Support but this sounds like an audio codex issue. Either with default configuration or an encoding bitrate bug. Those "clicks" are the noise generated when there's a sample rate issue. If simply selecting the right sample rate doesn't work the issue might run a little deeper. BTW, my lowly 13" rev 1.x M1MBP run's 12.1 quite happily. This explains why OS updates have slowed down for me (focusing on the 14").

Apple is this a user error or a something else?

I have this exact problem. Mac Pro M1 Max 16" purchased 2021 MacOS Monterey 12.2.1. No skipping when not in full screen mode, but the moment the video is in full screen mode it starts skipping. Further, I have no external speakers. I only use the built in speakers on the lap top. The Audio Midi fix doesn't really apply to this case although I am still trying to figure out that fix. Please let us know when this is fixed. Thanks for the observation of non full screen mode, now I can at least watch the videos (although somewhat annoyingly not in full screen mode).

AzoreanFox, You might be onto something there. However without detailed chip architecturer diagrams it would be difficult to pinpoint a potential problem with the SOC design or coding.

From what I can tell from this high level diagram, https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TkRsrQCTYUeBWCNcBxjXyT.jpg

there seems to be a focus on video processing but no module called out for audio. One must assume that the audio processing is done by one of the video processing elements. I like the high performance GPU for this.

Apple, where for art thou on this issue?

Service says it's a software problem. I reported the problem via Feedback Assistant and got a call from the technician saying he needed more data for diagnostics. So maybe they'll sort it out. Personally, I think they have a bug in the new processors or in their Firmware and will try to fix it software wise. I'll wait another week or two and then take it to the repair shop. And then quietly again until they either refund my money or fix the glitch. It's not a $200 machine.

Heya, I am just wondering how to do this?? Not good with electronics, and I am new to handling MacBook, got the M1 air as well and noticed this problem when playing a new Apple tv+ series and thought I had noticed it before but it disappeared again. But this time it's truly too noticeable, and want to resolve this. My mac is just 6 months of age and attended to keep this one for some years, so you can understand that 'an issue' is not something I was hoping for in the first year of her life.

No. Point two is not resolved by turning off the application. Because crackling is also heard from system sounds and, as is known, OSX has CoreAudio, so the application itself does not serve.

Apple claims that this is not a HW problem but it is not confirmed in any way. M1 are new quite complex processors so HW error is hard to rule out.
