You can upgrade to Monterey from as far back as OS X 10.9 Mavericks. I presume this question is for an older Mac you have and not your 2020 MBP?

you should be able to upgrade directly. but there have been a few reports of upgrade attempts from mojave directly to monterey failing. some users have needed to get catalina before moving to monterey. so be ready for that eventuality. and also, you should always make a backup first any time you need to update / upgrade.
