You have a double whammy!
No Mac model from 2020 onward has any support for Target Display Mode!
Second, no iMac model after the early 2014 supports Target Display mode!
So, you cannot use the iMac as a screen for your MacBook Air, period.
You can however use Screen Sharing over ethernet, and view the MacBook Air as a window on the iMac.

Glad to see the matter was figured out.
And the details were verified to have
been discontinued as was suspected.
With 2 desktops & 2 portable Macs here
connectivity is usually either is yes or no.
Yes. That's possible.
USB-C or USB-3.1+ ports, adapter, &/or cable.
Or other means, depending on the task.
What are you trying to do?
There may be a display adapter, if trying to
make use of the iMac as external display.
Some aspects of that may be discontinued.
Good luck! ☺︎
Perhaps you've been supplied a 'power delivery' cable.
Those usually do both: Power Delivery -- and Data.
Third-party cables of unknown status may do anything.
And even the correct one(s) may not do what you seek.
Maybe someone with that specific circumstance may reply.
If those cannot be connected, the idea may be discontinued.
Good luck & happy trails! ☺︎
Hmmm. I'm trying that to no avail. I got a cable from amazon (USB C to USB C 3.1 gen 2) and all it's doing is delivering power to the computer. I'm trying to share the screen on my air to my imac.
Thank you for the help and the information. This solved my issue and saved me a lot of money on wasted cables!
