Usually, no.

Check with the adapter vendor tech specs for details.

For a more specific answer, which USB-A to Ethernet adapter or USB-C to Ethernet adapter, and which model year MacBook Air?

Some options:

Thunderbolt: Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple

Belkin USB-C: The Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple

Docks: https://www.brydge.com/pages/docking-stations

etc…

Using a MacBook Air, 13 inch, 2017. Monterey 12.0.1.

I'm trying to use a NewerTech USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter purchased from OWC. The OWC web page (https://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=/manuals/item/nwtadpu3gige.html) recommended a driver. Haven't tried to install it as readme.txt has the line "Cannot install driver on os version 10.11 and later." Strange, being used to Mac's plug and play capabilities for so long.
