What Is Known About Print Shop for Mac 4.1 by Mackiev Software?

MacOS Catalina came out in October, 2019, and Print Shop for Mac 4.0 was incompatible with it because it was a 32-bit application (and Catalina forward didn't support 32-bit applications). So I've been stuck on Mojave for over two years in order to run my existing copy of Print Shop for Mac.

During that time, Mackiev (the developer) never created a 64-bit version; it appeared that further development of the app had been abandoned.

Recently, I received an email from Mackiev stating that they were in the final stages of creating a "true 64-bit update, 4.1, of the Print Shop product" which would be "fully compatible with Catalina through Monterey". From the sound of things, they haven't actually made this available, yet, however, but expect to in the near future.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is this for real? Is it a true 64-bit app that will run properly on Catalina forward? Perhaps most importantly, will it be backward-compatible with Print Shop projects created using previous version(s) of the product?

I'm somewhat dubious of this, given Mackiev's track record with failing to produce a 64-bit app following the introduction of Catalina (over two years ago). Also, I've heard (anecdotally) that this will be a port of their Windows product, and it will therefore not have the look and feel of the original Mac version.

I very much appreciate any insight anyone can offer.

As others have pointed out, a 64 bit update is now available. So far it runs fine under Monterey. The link is available only to registered users of The Print Shop 4.0. Once you have registered (or if you have already registered), you respond to the registration email and tell Support you need the 64 bit update. They will email you the link, but also as others have pointed out, you have to scroll through a bunch of MacKiev ads, to get to the link requesting the updater.

Yesterday I got a reply from the Mackiev CSR who handled my order for the update back in December. He admitted they have not started sending out the v4.1 update. No explanation about the delay, however, nor any indication of when they will actually make the update available. I'm planning to keep in contact so they don't forget me.

This email that MacKiev sent out in December 2021, saying that the 64 bit Printshop update was "almost ready" and that those that purchased version 3 would get the update for free, is merely VAPORWARE. Don't hold your breath. After I answered MacKiev's request with my email, my mailbox began to fill with 20 pieces of junkmail per day. I have to wonder if MacKiev was just selling my contact info to bogus vendors.

All versions of PrintShop were 32-bit, Intel architecture. Mackiev's move to 64-bit didn't occur until 4.1, and requires the installation of their, "PrintShop 4.1 Updater", which results in a 64-bit-compatible application (but still Intel architecture, requiring Rosetta 2 to run it).

From various respondents in this thread, it would seem that the Updater is only available to those who currently have 4.1 (the original, 32-bit application) installed; the Updater cannot be used to update older versions (such as 2.0) to 64-bit. Fortunately, I had kept my version of PrintShop up-to-date, and so met that requirement. Note: I have seen some statements by Mackiev implying that they can update Version 3.x to 64-bit.

I received an email just this past week with details of an available update. The email included a link to download the updated version. I was not able to find an update on their website, but was able to access the file by the link included in their email. While I don’t have a computer running Catalina or higher, the PrintShop app was updated successfully.

Hello all,

The Updater to 4.1 does check to see if you have already 4.0 installed (even if it is greyed out). The Updater then replaces that with 4.1 and the operating system then recognizes it as ThePrintShop4.0. By the way, I agree totally with another user who characterized the Bruderbund porting of PC Printshop to the Mac environment as a throwback and worthless.

Anyway, if you don't have 4.0 in your Application directory, then the Update won't work. So if you were waiting for an update of an earlier version, like 3.0, I think that's what Alexander (the current owner) meant when he said it is not yet available.

I found the email exchange I had with Alexander of MacKiev.

I, too, got the email 12/31/2021 saying they were updating and to expect an update email in a week. I asked if I could still update since I’d already deleted the old version. They said yes. Yesterday, I emailed asking about the update, and I got a reply late last night saying, “We are putting the finishing touches on The Print Shop for Mac updater . . . As soon as the update is ready, we’ll email it to you.” Both times I’ve emailed, I’ve gotten a reply from “Alex.” I’m beginning to think he’s the only person at Mackiev actually on The Print Shop Team. And yes, I, too, question the ethics of MacKiev.

I just chatted with Mackiev. 64 bit is available to present owners of Printshop 4. Printshop 4 is not available to purchase in North America because of legal reasons...did not say what those reasons are and also said, when asked, that legal reasons are not holding up update for older versions. There is no ETA for the update for older versions. When I was sent an email that 64 bit was going to be available soon, I updated to Monterey, now I can't use old version of Printshop. Is anyone using other comparable software? I am tired of waiting. Thanks.

I did get an email from Mackiev in response to my "pre-order", but no actual link to a downloadable file. Instead, the email says this:

HOW TO GET THE UPDATER
We are putting the finishing touches on The Print Shop for Mac updater for your version of The Print Shop. We will be sending those out in the next week or so and will email you.

My only guess is that they've pulled it back for some reason, and I'll just have to wait. Either that, or my version of PrintShop is somehow "different" than yours, and the Updater for it is not quite ready, yet. The About info for my version reads:

The Print Shop 4

2018 Edition (Build 885)

which is consistent with your earlier statement (that the Build Number changed from 885 to 900).

Anyway, hopefully in a week or so, I'll get another communication from them with an actual link to download the Updater.

Glad it worked out.

Perhaps one day they will update their website. If you try to download the update, it says "We are currently working on a compatibility update for your edition of The Print Shop. We will let you know by email as soon as this free update is ready."

At any rate, anyone who searches the internet about this issue and finds this post, they can know that the solution is to contact Mackiev directly. Thanks Bluesbrother3.

Ha-ha. Yes, it certainly gives one reason for pause, doesn't it? But, empirically speaking, it seems to "work" OK, and seems to be a true, 64-bit app, which was the main thing I was shooting for.

After waiting (and waiting, and waiting...) for years, I had given up all hope that MacKiev would ever release a 64-bit version of PrintShop, stranding PrintShop users like ourselves, stuck with the "old" version (and Mojave). Catalina, which didn't support 32-bit apps like PrintShop, debuted in fall of 2019.

So, we've received a "stay of execution" with the release of the PrintShop 4.1 Update. But it doesn't give one a warm feeling for the future.
