Unresponsive iPhone XS Max touch screen after new app launch

After launching a new app (NYT online) for the first time, my iPhone XS Max (IOS 15.2) became unresponsive. The only way to recover the device was to use Find My to completely erase the device and then restore from a full backup (from a Mac backup).

Has anyone experienced this issue and, if so, is there a way to prevent this or, perhaps, a better way to recover?

Here is a possible method to recover an iPhone when the touch screen is unresponsive. This method requires that Find My and related location services be setup in advance of experiencing the issue. Also, a recent backup will be needed to restore the device (e.g. full backup on a Mac).

  1. Use Find My from another device logged in to the same AppleId to (remotely) erase the device. This requires that the iPhone be connected to a wireless or WiFi network (to enable it to receive the erase command). This will then perform a factory reset which hopefully will restore the touch screen function. At this point, the iPhone can only be unlocked by its owner.
  2. Recover the iPhone configuration from a backup. In my case, I connected the iPhone to a Mac using a lightning cable. A previous backup (stored on the Mac) is used to restore the iPhone.

Hope this helps anyone who encounters a similar situation.

Thank you for your reply. I had a similar experience today accessing the nytimes.com site from my iPhone using the Safari browser. I suspect there are a few possibilities:

1) hardware issue with my iPhone touchscreen

2) NY Times site contains content which triggers serious IOS bug

3) software bug in NY Times IOS app

Fortunately, both times I was able to recover but not using the methods in the Apple documentation which don't work when the touch screen is unresponsive.
