Airpod Pro microphone cutting out

When I use my Airpod Pro's on a phone call the microphone has started to cut out randomly. There isn't any warning accept all of a sudden people saying "hello". It's gotten to the point that I can't trust my airpods for phone calls as I have to scramble to switch over to the phone. The airpods are outside of warranty period (not sure their age but probably 2 years old or older maybe). I've tried unpairing and re pairing them to my phone. Any other ideas or is the hardware just going out?

Hi there 1jrowner,

Thanks for joining us in Apple Support Communities! We understand people are unable to hear you when using your AirPods with your iPhone during phone calls. We're glad you're here, and we can provide some guidance.

To begin, do you see any dirt or debris gathered near the microphones? Does it help if you clean your AirPods? Learn more here:

How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods

Next, are your AirPods fully charged? If not, try giving them a full charge see if that makes a difference:

Also, try the suggestions here:

If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback, but none of the tips helped. The microphone works on the airpods, the issue is that the mike stops working in the middle of a call for a period of time. The airpods are still connected and I can hear the other party, the just suddenly stop hearing what I'm saying. This happens whether I'm on a cell connection or Wifi phone call and the airpods are charged (along with the phone). There isn't any warning when the microphone stops working so I don't know when it happens until I don't get a response to what I've said or the other party says "are you there?". I seem to have the latest software update on the airpods along with my phone (12 Pro).

Any other suggestions? My airpods are approx 1 year 8 months old.
