Let me start off by saying I really like my 2017 12" MB. It is portable, light, easy to travel with. However, it is getting time to upgrade so I am hoping the 2022 MBA is a little smaller and lighter than the 2020 MBA. The programs I use will not work on an iPad so what are your thoughts?

A 2022 model MacBook Air does not exist yet and know one other than Apple has any clue as to when or if one will be released.
A MacBook Air you purchase today is the same model that was released in late 2020.
From what I'm reading the new 2022 MBA will be out the first half of this year. My wife has the 2020 MBA and it's so clunky compared to my 12" MB. I am hoping the 2022 is lighter and a little smaller that the 2020.

As I said, only Apple engineers know what it will look like and when it will be actually be released. Rumors can often be quite wrong.
List the apps you need to run then check if the new Mac you are interested in will run them.
Go ahead, you won't regret it. I am using M1 MBA for the past 2 months, and coming from 2018 i5 MBP, I could feel the M1 MBA is a bit snappier and have a better keyboard
I know my apps will work. My dilemma is that I like the 12" screen on my MB and while the will work with the MBA they well not work on an iPad.
