I don't think my iCloud is backing up my Macbook Pro - what next?

I'm getting my Macbook Pro device ready to trade in and need to run a backup to iCloud. I've followed the instructions here but I have a dialogue box running that has not moved in over 30minutes.. Any suggestions to complete this process please?

if you look at # 2 in the article you linked to, it explains how you can back up and iCloud is not mentioned as an option. You need an external drive and then use Time Machine to create a backup.
