I'm downloading macOS Big Sur on my new laptop and accidentally started downloading macOS Monterey at the same time. Is there a way to cancel the Big Sur download and continue to download Monterey?

Hover your mouse pointer over the download window and click the X
this will stop the download

If the download had reached the point it wanted to install you would have seen a screen asking final confirmation but not having a red-circle to quit ... use opt-command-esc to bring up force-quit and force the undesired installer to exit.
