Once the computer is running the latest and Most up To Date Big Sur as long as the Internal Drive is Rotational or SSD and is an Original Apple Drive - it should upgrade to Monterey.

Very Best in the New Year !

Regarding type of Internal Drive - Traditional / Rotational Drives are must slower than SSD Drives

To Verify the Drive Type >> About this Mac >> Storage and refer to picture below. If the drive is Rotational or SSD The computer I am on says Flash Storage meaning SSD

Before doing anything - Big Sur 11.1 is very very out dated. The current version of Big Sur 11.6.2

Perform a Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS. before updating Big Sur.

Notation: Some( not all ) Users are experiencing issues and / or failures to upGrade to Monterey if the existing version of Big Sur is not totally up to date.
