Email not working in airplane mode with wifi enabled

I am in Aruba on an iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 15.1 on airplane mode with wifi enabled. My problem is I have a Sympatico and Hotmail acct that don't receive anything but a connection error but my Gmail acct works. Why?

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that 2 out of 3 accounts on your iPhone are having connectivity issues in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi enabled.


Are all three accounts added to the Mail app, or is this occurring in a third party app?


Do other services work as expected, such as Safari?


Does restarting your iPhone change the behavior? Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

Thanks for the reply bbesspete! Yes all three accounts are added to the mail app. My sympatico acct has a pophm.sympatico incoming server which could be the problem. I’ve switched my hotmail acct to an smtp acct which seems to have resolved that issue. So now I have two out of three that work. Is it the pop acct that is the problem and why?
