iphone unable to send email

Hello, I have emails stuck in my outbox and unable to send. I get the following on my iphone... 'cannot send mail the connection to the outgoing server "smpt.gmail.com" failed. Additional outgoing mail servers can be configured for mail accounts in Setting>Mail>Accounts. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
