We assume that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has furnished you with a modem/router or gateway device that provides a Wi-Fi network for your devices to connect to the Internet. Is our assumption correct?
The Time Capsule connects to your modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection. Connect the cable from an Ethernet port on the modem to the "O" Ethernet port on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule can be located anywhere that the Ethernet cable will reach. The Time Capsule Set Up Guide is linked just below.
If your Time Capsule is "tall" shaped, like a tower, select this link:
AirPort Time Capsule 802.11ac - Setup Guide
If your Time Capsule is "flat" shaped, like a small white pizza box, select this link:
AirPort Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) - Setup Guide
Then, when you have set up the Time Capsule to connect to your modem, your Mac will be able to connect to the Time Capsule via the Wi-Fi network that your modem/router provides and back up to the Time Capsule.
If you are still having difficulty, we will need the make and model number of your "modem" to verify that it is compatible with the Time Capsule. Please note that for security purposes we do not need a serial number, just the manufacturer name and model number which is usually located on the back or bottom of the modem.
