Pages Auto Save Google Drive Issues

I just upgraded from a 2015 MacBook Pro Big Sure 11.6.1 to the 2020 MacBook Pro Monterrey OS 12.0.1

My work uses Google Drive for file storage and sharing. Have been using it for over 6 years.

After my upgrade when creating pages documents I receive the following error.

Any ideas what is causing this and to fix this issue?

If I click "SAVE ANYWAY" it does not save.

If I click on "SAVE AS" it saves it once but then the new document has the same issue.

Thank you.

Google Drive is not a safe place for Pages documents because as zipped documents, Drive will attempt to unzip them when you double-click them. That destroys them. Google Drive won't do this for Microsoft documents (which are also zip containers) because Google programmed it to not damage them.

Apple's autosave probably won't work through multiple network hops to the filesystem on Google servers. I would recommend that you use the local drive, iCloud Drive, or an external USB drive that is not NTFS. I can even save Pages documents (with autosave) to my Synology NAS because the mounted share is AFP over TCP/IP.

At the end of the day, it is Google's responsibility to make the Google Drive Mac application compatible with macOS Monterey. They may or may not have done this, and then the question remains if the Pages or macOS product teams have inadvertently changed things so that now Pages v11.2 no longer works with Google Drive. As a fellow user with no access to the Pages product team, I cannot speculate about that.

Apple codes the Pages application to work with iCloud/iCloud Drive and the Box cloud provider for Pages document collaboration.

Hi there, did you manage to figure this out? I have exactly the same problem.

It worked perfectly on my iMac for years - all of my work, organisation and life is essentially on Google Drive, and I love Pages for making nice documents - but upgrading to Silicon has made this impossible.

I don't love the idea of moving everything away from Drive, and I'd rather not have half of my work in one place and the other half somewhere else....
