delete songs/albums from iPhone 12 pro max

I have followed the seemingly simple instructions to permanently delete selected music from my iPhone 12 pro max to no avail. When I delete a song or album from my phone indication is I'm left with 0 kb yet later the **** song still plays. What am I doing wrong and how can I permanently delete songs/albums?
