After updating software, iTunes gave us an error message: 'unknown error (78)'.
It also says that the software cannot be updated; it can only be restored to factory setting.
We do NOT have the photos and contacts backed up. We would like to recover/download photos and contacts BEFORE restoring to original factory setting. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you for your help.

To backup your iPhone on iCloud go to Settings> Apple ID> iCloud. Here you can turn on the contacts and photos.
After doing this, on the same settings page, go to iCloud backup, and select Back Up Now.
