Phantom badge in Messages

I'm running macOS Monterey 12.0.1. Ever since the update, my messages have a phantom badge. I've tried some of the fixes that others suggested in 2018, but I suspect this is a newer problem. I've tried closing Messages and restarting the computer. I've tried going into terminal and typing killall Dock. Neither works.

Any ideas to get rid of the badge short of turning off notifications?

Hi juliefrommiami, We appreciate you reaching out to us. We understand that you have a badge on your Messages app that will not clear.

We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

Do you have a different Apple device that is signed in to the same Apple ID? If yes, are you experiencing a similar issue with your other device?

We recommend that you check if the issue persists while on safe mode. Below is an article to help guide you through the process.

Also, we recommend that you check if the issue persists when signed in on a different user account. The article below can help if you do not have any other user account to test with.
