I know Apple’s in the process of changing its charging ability to make it self unique but the charger does not come with the adapter to put it into a USB cord

Do I have to buy a separate adapter in order to charge my watch now?

You need one of these power adapters: About fast charge on Apple Watch Series 7 - Apple Support

  • Apple 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB-C Power Adapter
  • A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) of 5W or greater

If you have cable and adapter from a previous Apple Watch, you can also use that, but fast charging will not be available.

You can also plug the Watch into any USB-C port which is available on newer computers.

Electronic waste is huge, especially charging bricks. Apple is attempting to live within restrictions being placed on it by other countries, as well as be responsible.

They do not know which users already have chargers. But including a charger with each and every hand held device adds up to a huge number (millions and millions) of power bricks, many of which are excess for the users and becomes e-waste.

While I think Apple could do a better job at this, but Apple does tell you want is in the box.

i understand waste, and respect not doing that, but i dont think that many apple owners have the new magnetic charge adapters. I happen to have one that i Had forgotten about on my newer Apple Computer but it stays in my office no place to plug here where I keep my watch just thought it would be easier to have an adapter closer by

Apple is not being unique when it comes to chargers. USB-C is a standard, and places like the EU are pushing to make it a standard for all hand held devices.

You can use any USB-C port on a personal computer. You can use the USB-C charger from a recent MacBook Pro, iPhone, or iPad. You can use a previous Apple Watch charging puck and power brick, you can purchase any vendor's USB-C charger (it does not need to be Apple's), from stores such as Best Buy, Staples, Amazon, Apple, etc...

The Apple Watch comes with a USB-C to Magnetic puck cable.

It can be plugged in to any USB-C charger you may already have.

You can also use a cable from a previous Apple Watch if you have one with a regular USB-A charger brick.

If you have neither, then yes, you will need to buy a USB-C charger brick, or a USB-A to Magnetic Charging puck cable to use with your existing USB-A charger bricks.

The charger bricks are just regular USB-C chargers. They are now common with many devices. But as I said, you can use an even more traditional USB-A charger, with the appropriate cable if you really want to.

The magnetic puck is at the end of the included cable and attaches to the Apple Watch.
