I am having some troubles with my macbook update. I was trying to contact apple, they asked my serial number. Once I use my serial number from about this Mac and use the number it says doesn't exist.

Have you had the motherboard replace at any time? That can trigger a bad search for the original serial no.
Is the serial no. listed on the bottom of the laptop?
I'd give Apple Support a call to get it sorted out.
