What is the secret for connecting a external Dell monitor to a new Mac Book?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and wanted an external monitor. We did some research and one of the suggested monitors was the Dell UltraSharp 27. Is is supposed to connect with a USB-C to USB-C.

This does not work. Tried a restart on the monitor. Tried the trick to "discover" the monitor by holding down the option button within the Display setting, and pretty much everything else I could find online.

There must be something with the newer MacBooks as my son recently bought a new Air and is having the same issue with his monitor. Has Apple come up with a solution or has anyone else for that matter.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have two M1 MacBook Pros with no issues with my external displays. Neither of the external displays are Dell so my experience does not apply here but thought that I would mention.

QUESTIONS: Did you use the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with the Dell Display? If NOT then try that cable. Have you tried reversing the USB-C ends? In other words, just switch the cable ends and connect the MacBook and the Display.
