Accidental calling of favorites on hang up on my iPhone

For the last year or so, I've had a problem where I go to end a call which is over by clicking end call, but the other person hangs up first, and the screen change back to the "favorites" or "Recent calls" list, causing me to initiate a call with whoever was below the end call button. I have an iPhone 11, and this never happened with my previous iPhones. It seems something must have changed around that time.

Any advice on how to prevent this from happening? The person who is 8th on my favorites list is getting kind of annoyed.

This is iOS 17+ only, temporary workaround. It's not perfect and has its own limit.

At least you won't call someone accidently by hanging up little too late.

1. Open Shortcuts app (It's integrated in iOS)

2. Tap "Automation" at the bottom of the screen

3. Tap "New Automation".

4. Scroll down and tap "App".

5. Tap "Choose" and select "Phone" then "Done".

6. Unmark "Is Opened" and mark "Is Closed". (Make sure ONLY "Is Closed" is marked.)

7. Mark "Run immediately"

8. Tap "Next" at the top right.

9. On the screen, tap "New Blank Automation".

10. Tap "Add Action".

11. Type in "go to" in the search box and tap "Go to Home Screen" that pops up below.

12. Tap "Done".

That's it.

Now when you call someone, the screen immediately goes to home screen, preventing

accidental calling from favorite or recent list.

If you want to go back to phone app during call just tap the green phone icon at

top-left. It will still go back to home screen when the call ends by either side.

You can select the default action of messaging when you add a favorite. So you need to remove any favorites that you want to change and then add them back to favorites thus getting to the prompt to select a default action option for an individual favorite. Would be nicer if Apple would just create an action edit option within favorites of course. It’s been working well for me. No more accidental calls from the favorites list. The extra step to then have to do a couple taps to make a call to a favorite is very acceptable to me.

Works for me, no more accidental calls from Recents list. Hopefully they fix it one day.

Wow. Seems like an awful lot of work when you could just push one button. But, if it works for you, that's great.

Hi justinsarma,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with accidentally touching your iPhone screen while simultaneously ending a call. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

You can test using the side button to end calls while the phone is still up to your ear. There's a previous post about some not liking the feature, yet explaining how it works here: How to change side button from automatically hanging up calls in iOS 14.2 as well as accessibility options here: how to hang up a call when blind and can't see the screen

Best!

I just set up a Contact called Dummy Number and used 555-555-5555 as the phone number, then saved to Favorites. Then, go to Favorites and hit Edit. Scroll to bottom of list. Put your finger on the three horizontal lines to the right of Dummy Number and you should be able to slide it just above the number you always dial by mistake. From now on it should dial this number.

Whole process will take about 2 to 3 minutes.

When it happens you'll hear a tone and "Your call cannot be completed..." Then hang up.

Not great but beats dialing a real person.

Reposting what I sent to a similar thread because this flaw is frustrating:

Found a workaround until Apple adds the delay back...

Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Call Hang Up > Turn on

You can now say "Hey siri, hang up" at the end of a call.

Whoever you're talking to will obv hear it, so I wouldn't use it for calls other than family and friends, but a late night call to the wife will no longer end with accidental calls to co-workers from the favorites screen.

FWIW, the side lock button to hang up is hit or miss for me (mostly miss) and no, I've not got it disabled.

I have had the exact same problem and has found no solution online. I ended up creating two fake contacts in my phone called “misdial thwarted” 1&2 and then I put those two contacts on my favorite list, positioned in that 7th and 8th spot so they will fall right under the end call button. It’s not fool proof, if you’ve scrolled down your favorite list before the call that you are now ending, but it is pretty helpful. I do wish Apple would come up with a solution to this

I’m having the same issue. I hang up and then touch the screen and accidentally call someone on my favorites list. I’ve created a workaround. When you hang up a call the phone goes to the last tab you were on: favorites, recents, contacts, etc. I’m now starting all calls from the contacts screen so when I hang up it goes back to the contacts screen. Touching the contacts screen opens a contact, but it doesn’t call them. To get my “favorites” to the top of the contacts list, I put an “AA” in front of the last name. Now if I accidentally touch the “touch” screen the phone doesn’t call someone. I won’t use the favorites or recents screen again until Apple fixes the issue.

Remove the favorite(s) you want to change the action of and then when you add them back to favorites, you will get a pop up to select the primary action to take when that favorite is select on your list - select message and the appropriate phone number if the person has more than one number. Then on the favorites list, it should show the message icon and “message” in gray under the contact name rather than the phone icon for the designated action.

I agree. Add a 1 second delay between one call to another. You can even have a switch in settings to toggle on and off if others don't like it. It usually is the other person hangs up first while I'm in motion to hang up. It dials the next person and I hang up from that call. Then they see they missed a call from me and call me back.

Meanwhile, end the call using the side button.

This is a very frustrating issue. Below is a temporary fix I follow:

  • Create 2 dummy contacts with invalid telephone numbers
  • Add these 2 dummy entries to the favorite list so that the position is right below the End-Call red button.
  • If you accidentally click these dummy entries, the call will not go through.

Not an elegant solution. But it is better than disturbing someone by mistake.

Mar 7, 2023 11:36 AM in response to justinsarma

My work-around to this ANNOYING issue is to add my own number as a favorite right where the hangup/dial button is. On my phone that's 9th place from top. That way if I mis dial my favorite, it will be just me :-)

I would suggest a possible solution for Apple:

Revert the screen back to something else other than our favorites after call disconnect.

Apr 25, 2023 9:38 PM in response to justinsarma

This has become so annoying. I’m accidentally dialing people in my recents multiple times per day. I just came back to iPhone after leaving them for two years. This is making me regret that decision. This can easily be fixed by either A.) making the call function from recents a swipe instead of a tap, or B.) defaulting to the Home Screen after a call. The call function is TOO SENSITIVE. Please Apple, this is is simple. Fix it! Tip: I’ve had to start training myself to dial out of messages instead of recents. It’s been working so far. But on a phone this smart, I shouldn’t need a work around.
