Accidental calling of favorites on hang up on my iPhone

For the last year or so, I've had a problem where I go to end a call which is over by clicking end call, but the other person hangs up first, and the screen change back to the "favorites" or "Recent calls" list, causing me to initiate a call with whoever was below the end call button. I have an iPhone 11, and this never happened with my previous iPhones. It seems something must have changed around that time.

Any advice on how to prevent this from happening? The person who is 8th on my favorites list is getting kind of annoyed.

PLEASE FIX THIS....It happens multiple time's per week...you go to hit the end call button but the screen disappears at the same time bc the other person hung up faster...you then click one of your favorites by accident...When a call ends, it should close out the phone app all together and you should be looking at your home screen after a call...PLEASE FIX THIS

This has become so annoying. I’m accidentally dialing people in my recents multiple times per day. I just came back to iPhone after leaving them for two years. This is making me regret that decision. This can easily be fixed by either A.) making the call function from recents a swipe instead of a tap, or B.) defaulting to the Home Screen after a call. The call function is TOO SENSITIVE. Please Apple, this is is simple. Fix it!

The more people who do, the more likely it is that this issue will be something they pay attention to.

Please initiate a change in iOS to revert to older code. It used to be that when the other person ended the call, the call control screen would show “Call Ended” for 1-2s. Now, there is nothing. As described by many others, if you go to end the call by pressing the red “end call” button, but the other person beats you by 1ms, the call control screen vanishes and you inadvertently end up touching a name on your recently called list.

This changed in 2022 with one of the updates. PLEASE - change it back!!

You can select the default action of messaging when you add a favorite. So you need to remove any favorites that you want to change and then add them back to favorites thus getting to the prompt to select a default action option for an individual favorite. Would be nicer if Apple would just create an action edit option within favorites of course. It’s been working well for me. No more accidental calls from the favorites list. The extra step to then have to do a couple taps to make a call to a favorite is very acceptable to me.

Just wanted to thank sejin208 for this workaround!

“This is iOS 17+ only, temporary workaround. It's not perfect and has its own limit.

At least you won't call someone accidently by hanging up little too late.

1. Open Shortcuts app (It's integrated in iOS)

2. Tap "Automation" at the bottom of the screen

3. Tap "New Automation".

4. Scroll down and tap "App".

5. Tap "Choose" and select "Phone" then "Done".

6. Unmark "Is Opened" and mark "Is Closed". (Make sure ONLY "Is Closed" is marked.)

7. Mark "Run immediately"

8. Tap "Next" at the top right.

9. On the screen, tap "New Blank Automation".

10. Tap "Add Action".

11. Type in "go to" in the search box and tap "Go to Home Screen" that pops up below.

12. Tap "Done".”

Works for me, no more accidental calls from Recents list. Hopefully they fix it one day.

Meanwhile, try ending the call with the side button.

I can't believe it's 2024, and there's still no cure for the common cold. Or jetpacks.

Hi justinsarma,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with accidentally touching your iPhone screen while simultaneously ending a call. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

You can test using the side button to end calls while the phone is still up to your ear. There's a previous post about some not liking the feature, yet explaining how it works here: How to change side button from automatically hanging up calls in iOS 14.2 as well as accessibility options here: how to hang up a call when blind and can't see the screen

Best!

Still an issue in 2023!!!!!!!

This is so unprofessional. I’m surprised the CEO or board members are not complaining about this as well. My family switched from android several years ago, and now this issue has them thinking about switching back to android.

Devs: show a call ended screen for one second after either party hangs up. If a user wants to close the screen early, they can swipe up to go to the Home Screen.

Feedback submitted (although about the recent calls list, it is exactly the same issue as present with the favorites list mentioned here. Namely, that there screens exist that list multiple contacts at once that allow instant dialing by accident which can easily happen during other usage) …:

"When the recent calls list is open, even just scrolling through it means enormous odds of accidentally dialing someone on it. The functionality present in the (i) link to the right should be the behavior on the entire name. The "dial now" functionality should either be removed completely or put into the space occupied by the (i) at present.

Relatedly: sometimes scrolling on the phone is not responsive or not smooth (any app) and when this happens, attempting to scroll turns into a tap or unknown delayed action. This is true even on a new iPhone 15 Pro with ample space and battery life. But even worse when any of those three are not the case."

I can’t believe it’s 2024 and this hasn’t been fixed. It’s only 9am where I’m at right now and I’ve just pocket called 2 people from the “accidentally hanging up 0.1 seconds too late” issue. The problem is this will continue to happen to nearly everybody until Apple decides to do one of two things: 1) Delay the screen timeout when the other party hangs up. Or 2) Default back to the Home Screen immediately after the other party hangs up. The iPhones used to just have a short delay years ago (which is the best option). Ever since that changed, I either click the 8th or 9th person in my favorites list or WORSE, I click someone in my recent calls list EVERY SINGLE DAY, MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY. This is especially frustrating since this is my work phone & I find myself accidentally calling customers at ridiculously early/late hours which is embarrassing. To make matters worse, even if I hang up within 1/1,000,000,000 of a second, they somehow still get the missed call notification. I know this issue has got to be affecting the vast majority of iPhone users. Something needs to be done or I can imagine consumers will start switching to other Android, etc. if they haven’t already. I have seriously considered it over this issue alone & I know several people who specifically don’t use an iPhone for their work phone because of this issue! How is Apple not catching on?
