Many of the merchants listed in my monthly statement are in the wrong category is there any way to put them in the appropriate category?
Basically no. The merchant selects the codes and they’re referred to as Merchant Category Codes (MCC). You can Google the topic and find multiple links that will go into much more detail on the subject. But just for reference MasterCards link to the catalog of codes is over 400 pages in a downloadable PDF.
While the merchants choice of codes can be appealed to MasterCard, Visa, Discover and AmEx, they’re note something that Goldman Sachs, Apple or any other third party can appeal or change.
