Cannot Connect Wii Remote to MacOs Montery 12.1

I cannot connect my genuine wii remote to my m1 macbook air running 12.1 Monterey over bluetooth. This used to work over bluetooth in big sur but does not now on montery. I don't want to have to downgrade back to big sur but it is important that I get this to work. Does anyone else have this issue and if so has anyone found a fix?
