Call any of my stored contacts now says "the number is not recognised"

If I call one of my contacts stored on my iPhone XS, it says "the number is not recognised", but if I dial the number using the keypad, it works fine.

Until last week it was working fine and my contacts have been stored and used for years. with full country code.

Can anyone suggest what might have changed?
