Restoring iPhone from Finder
I just spent the past 12 hours fighting through a restore process after I upgraded my iPhone 11 Pro Max to an iPhone 13 Pro Max and there was one minor detail that could have saved me a quite a bit of time.
After attempting to restore from iCloud from 6PM to 6AM, a balance of 3GB would not finish restoring. Progress had been very chunky between 6PM and 10PM and I had moved the needle previously by disconnecting and reconnecting to WIFI.
When I woke up at 5AM and noticed that the restore had not finished, I decided I would restart the process and restore from my 2021 MacBook running on Monterey 12.1. After initiating the process (Plug in phone, navigate to finder, erase & restore from back-up, enter password, start) the progress bar kept spinning once the erase was complete and I was brought to the "hello screen". This is where I got stuck.
It was unclear whether or not the process was happening in the background, if I needed to follow the steps on the phone, or if I was having connectivity issues with my USB. Long story short, it was the password.
I believe there needs to be a clarification point regarding which password is needed and a notification that the password provided was not accepted. I had set up the password 10 months previous and had assumed the prompt was for MacBook login. After realizing I was 100% sure what password it was asking for, phone or laptop or other, I searched through my encrypted notes and found what I was looking for.
TLDR; I was using wrong password in finder to restore encrypted backup due to perceived ambiguity and neither my phone nor laptop let me know what was entered was failing.
