How can I reset an iPad that won't stay on. I need to clear it and start again. I have tried several times but my iPad turns off and the pre Backup fails?

If your intent is to wipe/reset the device(s) for reuse by a new user, you would be best advised to prepare them properly:

What to do before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support


Otherwise, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter. While still connected to external power…


For iPadOS15 or later:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings


For iPadOS14 and earlier:

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
