Apps constantly running in background (according to screen time)

A few weeks ago, the Twitter app started running 24/7 on my phone. I don’t have the Twitter app. Nothing worked to turn it off except finally creating an app limit so it only runs a minute a day.

Now, app.squarespacescheduling.com has been running constantly for over a week. I have never had that app, but did use their web app integrated into another web app to make an appointment recently, which I assume triggered it. I attempted to create a limit for it, but the limit is doing nothing.

How do I turn these off? Is it a bug going to be fixed soon? How do I enforce the time limit? I just want my screen time back!

  • What type of iPhone do you use? Is your iOS software up-to-date? If not, create a backup of your iPhone, then update the software. Here's how to Back up iPhone and also how to Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Also, keep in mind, if you have recently updated your iOS software the device will re-index the apps and photos, which could also result in background activity.

  • Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Does that show that Background App Refresh is On? If so, this may be expected behavior. When Background App Refresh is turned on, apps that use Background App Refresh can run either when scheduled or triggered by a notification. You can find more information about this feature and other settings that you can adjust outlined here: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan.


  • You may want to close all the running apps on your iPhone and then restart the device. Here is a guide with information on how to close running apps: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch. You can also review this link for details on how to Restart your iPhone. Often this simple step will refresh the apps and software on the device to solve numerous problems you may encounter.
