After reading an individual text message which shows up on the right side of my list of text messages on my iPad, how do I close/collapse that message and go back to full screen list of text messages?
Thank you sberman. What I want to know is if I can close the current message that is showing and just go back to a full screen list of text messages. Does that make sense? So in your example I want to not see the message from Edwina anymore just my list of text messages.
You don't. The Messages screen will always display the list to the left and the last message your viewed on the right. I've never seen just the list of messages displayed on the iPad.

As ChrisJ4203 mentioned, you cannot do that.
There is no reason to provide additional real estate (in the width direction) to the list of messages displayed on the left.
