Windows Office for Mac Scam - Foreign IP Address

I just went through a vert sophisticated scam while installing a new version of MS Office for Mac. POsting here for others. I really hope Apple 7 MS take this seriously to fix this issue. So I browsed to Office Setup.com and inserted my newly purchased Key Code. A whole screen error message appeared (only later did I realize it was a whole screen pop-up) telling me there was a problem with my Office install and to call a MS help desk phone no - 800 number. I wish I had a screen shot of the pop-up. I called the 800 number and it was answered by a person saying MS office support. He then led me down the garden path - using team viewer and scanned my system w terminal, etc; for about 5 minutes. He also asked for my laptop login, which got me really suspicious. He then claimed that a foreign IP address needed to be removed by his tech support team - and this would cost me $199. At which point I hung up and disconnected team viewer. Googled this scam and subsequently changed my login and scanned my whole system several times with Malwarebytes and Webroot.

Note: an Ad scan app was removed by Malwarebytes during my scans.

THIS WAS A VERY SOPHISTICATED SCAM!!

I really hope Apple / MS can nail these ********! Many, many people could be suckered in.

Never ever call a number in an email or popup window. Hopefully you changed all your passwords since you let them browse your computer and you gave then your password. You should advise your finacial institurions and credit card companies if you provided access to your financial or private information.

I respectfully disagree. Whatever malware I had allowed onto my system was specifically designed to scam off the MS Office setup.

I also believe Apple & MS have the capacity and the responsibility to track such specific scam threats. Suggesting a local law enforcement report as being effective is surely a joke.

Perhaps you could also re-consider your own online tone. Being scammed is no fun. And I expect an honest effort to report it and make an attempt to be responsible for others in this community could be viewed accordingly.

If I can explain a little further Bob. The pop-up did not appear as a pop-up - it was whole screen. AND it came up as a direct result of clicking on an official MS Office install button. I did not realize it as a pop-up till after the fact. That is why I am describing this scam as sophisticated. Maybe phishing has become more sophisticated than I had realized.

I sense that anyone without some level of understanding of IP addresses would easily have been scammed for the $199.

MS and Apple can and do have a whole staff dedicated to informing law enforcement. You could try that reality!

I see you chose not to respond to my comment about helpful online tone. That seems unfortunate. I bet many people who have been scammed are embarrassed and angry. I would hope experienced folks such as yourself could respond accordingly.

OK, I agree (hopefully). The specific point i am trying to communicate is that whatever malware existed on my system (a one month old new MBP by the way) was able to track my click on the official MS website.

I am 100% clear that after I cleared the pop-up - underneath was still the official MS website page and it operated perfectly to install my MS Office.

Hopefully, I am being clear and specific as to my concern.
