Contacts getting mixed up and disappearing on my iPhone

Recently my existing text message streams suddenly got updated to show different contacts from my iPhone. (Using other contacts that were saved in the iCloud. I turned off the phone and the contact names/photos were restored.

not sure if this is related, but now when trying to search for contacts to phone or in contacts on my device, contacts are not found. However when searching in text I can find them. Also I can call the contact from recents (the name appears as I had saved it in contacts on my phone.

Help!
