What to do about "disk not ejected properly" when M1 Mac, Big Sur sleeps?

Just setting up my new M1 Mac mini. What do I do about "disk not ejected properly" Notifications when my M1 Mac, Big Sur sleeps? Do I have to turn off my USB Hubs every time my Mac is going to sleep?

External hard disks always put to sleep? Hi, I have several USB hard disks connected to my Mac mini; most of the time, several of them are mounted at the same time. I've recently noticed that all of them are put to sleep after idle, despite the fact that “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” in System Preferences is always unchecked (I choose this way). I would understand the other way around, as an app using the disk regularly, but this case puzzles me. I know disk's firmwares may be configured to put disks to sleep, but I'm sure some of the affected hard disks didn't have this behaviour in the recent past. I don't know the exact day this behaviour has started. I believe it's either when I bought my Mac mini (shipped with MacOS 11) or when I installed Mac OS 12, some weeks later. Searching on the Internet led no good results to me. Has Mac OS X recently changed in this regard? If not, what else can put idle disks to sleep?

Put Hard Disks Sleep When Possible in Ventura M1 Mac mini - option has disappeared This option in energy saver was available on my Mac mini M1 Ventura 13.5. However I notice that if one turns it off the option disappears - you can't turn it on again. Surely this is not by design? It is posing a real problem for me - In Adobe Lightroom when I right click Lightroom will wait for any external disks to spin up before responding. This takes several seconds and is slowing me down a lot! My external disks are for backup only and not used by Lightroom. In order to work efficiently I have to unmount the backup disks and then of course forget to remount them for backups. Disable Sleep, it’s unnecessary on later Macs, all pain, no gain. To disable, check “Prevent…” in Energy Preferences and uncheck everything else. You can leave the display off time as is, unrelated to Sleep. Shut for long absences i.e. > 2 hours.

Others have had the similar issue and it has been suggested to turn off sleep and just use screen saver mode. That is what I now use. Perhaps apple will address this issue in a future release.
