how to change brightness on new M1 laptop

Hi, I can't seem to find the setting to change the brightness on my screen. My f1 buttons and f2 buttons don't seem to work. Can anyone direct me to the right place to make the settings change? I would also like to make the settings stay and not auto dim. Why would Apple take this ability away from us???

Thanks!
