iPad Air button hot

I have an iPad Air, and for about 4 days the power Button in the top right corner is hot to touch. You can put your finger on it for about 5-10 seconds until you get a noticeable discomfort.

apple support online said I had to take it in for diagnostics.

diagnostics said “battery fine, temp fine” I assume the temp is the processing temp and not the button. The so called tech specialist at the store said it was “not too hot”. Although my children, wife and a random friend who was in the store disagree with this specialist.

im back on the phone with online support, they referred me to safety, they are now referring to engineering.

but. I really just want an iPad without a hot button as my kids use it for school.

any advice? Has anyone else had this experience? I normally have good outcomes with apple.. but this seems to be going nowhere

The physical Home Button / TouchID sensor should not become uncomfortably warm. The TouchID sensor contains its own processor and associated electronics which can, in some circumstances, cause unexpected heating. A temporary software issue, or a hardware fault, can often be attributed to the cause.

If not already attempted, a forced-restart of your iPad may clear the the problem…

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If the problem remains unresolved, you would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store, where you can demonstrate the issue - and the technicians can perform appropriate tests.

Hello,

I am experiencing same issue with my iPadAir (4th gen), we bought two the same day several months ago at physical Apple Store. My unit has this very-hot-top button problem, my spouse does not even though she leaves the unit 'on' much longer than I. The button can get uncomfortably hot without the unit even being used, simply powered on.

I am in process of making an in-store appointment to have the unit checked and tested.
