trying to connect hp p232 monitor to macbook pro. No matter what I do, it is not detected. I click on the detect displays button but nothing seems to happen.

Almost every adapter HDMI/DisplayPort works ONLY from DisplayPort on the computer to HDMI on the display, and NOT the reverse.
You generally can not "stack" adapters.
You need an adapter/cable that makes the conversion from computer output to display input in at most ONE adapter.

EXACTLY what cables and adapters and docks are you using to make the connection? mention every device.
I've got a usb-c to hdmi adapter and then a hdmi to displayport cable.
