If the CPU/GPU on your Mac notebook reaches a certain temperature, the system fan will run at higher speeds to compensate. At even higher temperatures, the CPU/GPU may "throttle" down to help cool it. This is typically caused by "pushing" your notebook by simultaneously running multiple "demanding" applications.
