uninstall xcode developer tools

Two related(?) things:

1/ The App Store wants me to upgrade XCode, and I have searched and don't seem to have it (and don't want it). Can I stop this?

2/ I have a large folder in the system (not user) library called Developer, close to 4 GB, and I don't think I need it. Can I just safely drag it to the Trash, the way some claimed you could a decade or more ago?

Thank you.

Thank you, VikingOSX (and MrHoffman).

So far I have simply moved the Developer folder (3.8 GB!) to the Desktop, and yes "moved" not "copied", rebooted once, and the machine seems to be purring along contentedly, and the requests to update XCode, which I don't have, have ceased (for now).

Another little while and Developer can simply hit the bin.

Launch Spotlight, and enter Xcode in the search box, and see if you have a copy of Xcode somewhere. (The software update and app store detection is tied into Spotlight.)

It would appear that developer tools are (or were) installed here.

One common reason for having Xcode or the command line tools installed can be an add-on app, such as one installed with homebrew or such.

You seemingly have something partially downloaded, or maybe downloading in the background, or command-line tools, then.

The command line developer tools are a subset of the Xcode package, if that’s what is installed here.

I haven’t been running with just the command line tools, but this might get you updated:

Command-line tools are fairly compact. Xcode, not so much.

Thanks so much MrHoffman. No XCode shows up on Spotlight.

I did browse through HomeBrew on Terminal the other day ...

... and also, I was trying something and typed in a command which required downloading developer tools, and I said yes, and then it said 91 hours (it did!), so I cancelled it. Perhaps something happened at that time.

... and oh well, it's doing no harm, I have the disk-space, so it that ever gets tight I might just drag that Developer folder to the Trash (or move it somewhere neutral first) and see what happens.

The perpetual request to upgrade XCode is a little annoying — nothing more.

Thanks again.
