Liquid Spill 15 Jan - advice please

hi all,

Thanks for any help you can offer. I have a 2017 Mac Book Pro. 13 Inch.

On 15th Jan, I spilt liquid over the top right side of my keyboard. Keys affected delete, return and those around it. I cleaned it immediately with isopropyl, but realise damage has been done. I quickly backed it up, as I do regularly. Let it dry, and wiped cold machine with isopropyl to clean sticky keys. Machine still functioning.

On 19th Jan, keys were still getting sticky, and I had a day off, so paid $99 for a forensic assessment. They've quoted AUD $2742 (+ $275 labour) to repair claiming 'extensive liquid damage to multiple parts of the machine. Top case which contains the battery, keyboard, trackpad, touchbar is damaged. Quote is to repair to working order by replacing affected parts. '

Then they offered some advice on repurchasing a new machine and the benefits of that against cost pressure and current specs, compared to new specs.

20 Jan - lodged a claim with insurance for a pay out so I can purchase a new iMac, instead of either repairing or replacing MacBookPro

21st Jan - Still cleaning the keys every day as they get sticky, I can't seem to lift them well enough to clean. Not sure if they pop off easily, and I'm scared to reduce functionality of it until insurance claim comes through, and of course, I use it every day working from home. Machine still functioning. Ran an Apple diagnostics test in recovery mode, no issues found, code ADP000.

Any advice or suggestions welcome but my current trajectory is to buy a new 24" Imac.

Friends have suggested a techy friend pulls the keys off and cleans the keyboard given it's still working all well but I think the function will gradually decline and likely corrosive issues will occur with time.

What's your opinion?

Thanks heaps for reading,

do it yourself is not recommended...

Liquid damage typically gets worse over time not better.

If you have AppleCare+ it will cover a large portion of accidental damage.
