I am trying to sync my MAC air Catalina 10.15.7 with my iPhone 8 iOS15.1 to sync my music library. It is not letting me do it. ???

I am trying to sync my MAC air Catalina 10.15.7 with my iPhone 8 iOS 15.1without using iTunes or Apple Music. I have been trying to use the directions provided for this which tells me to use the Finder window and the first request is to connect my device with a USB cable, which I did and my device does not appear in the Finder window to permit me to continue with the directions.

Where do I go from here? Al
